The Respiratory Systemic Effects of High Doses of Propylene Glycol
It seems that the lobbyist and anti-smoking activist have whipped the US FDA into a freenzy over electronic cigarettes. But, debating politics is not what this is about.
Mention Anti-Freeze and everyone freaks out, we all know it’s not a good idea to drink it. Even a small glass can have adverse affects on your health…I don’t know of anyone who would recommend drinking it.
Propylene glycol being one of the major concerns when electronic cigarettes are mentioned, Nicotine another but that is for another discussion.
So what about propylene glycol? What is it? Propylene glycol is not Anti-Freeze it is just one of the ingredients. Propylene glycol is also found in cake mixes and MANY other food products. Most likely, more propylene glycol has been ingested from food than by inhalation and more than likely there are few people on this planet that have not consumed it in one form or another.
OH, but there may be a difference when propylene glycol is inhaled as opposed to being eaten. Really?! I’m not a scientist so maybe that is true, but what about this study from Novartis Pharmaceuticals, Safety Profiling and Assessment, Emeryville, California published in the Journal of Aerosol Medicine.
http://www.liebertonline.com/doi/abs/10.1089/jam.2007.0626
” There was no unexpected systemic toxicity or clinically limiting local respiratory toxicity associated with inhalation exposure to cyclosporine inhalation solution at exposures up to 2.7 times the maximum human exposure in either rats or dogs. There were no respiratory or systemic effects of high doses of propylene glycol relative to air controls. These preclinical studies demonstrate the safety of aerosolized cyclosporine in propylene glycol and support its continued clinical investigation in patients undergoing allogeneic lung transplantation.”
It seems like they were more concerned with cyclosporine than propylene glycol. If that is true and apparently it is, why is everyone so freaked out about propylene glycol? I don’t know…you tell me.
